The trout season in Category 1 waters ends next week for us anglers in Haute-Savoie. That means some of us will be trading in our little flies for XXL feather lures in search of pike. As for me, my fishing spots are exclusively Category 2 enclosed waters. But I have to admit that it must be fun to fish for these fish in rivers.
I’m bringing this up because I stumbled upon a video of Landon Hintz cruising down one of his home rivers in a drift boat to hunt for the maskinongé. Basically, behind that name lies the cousin of our pike—but in a bodybuilder version. It’s the best the Esox genus has to offer. But the best part is that he’s fishing for them peacefully from his boat right in the middle of the forest. That said, let’s be honest—you’ve got to be patient, but that’s part of fishing, too. You don’t always land a big one. You’ll see Landon explain his mindset and also the fish’s behavior, how to fish for it, what the bite feels like… In short, it’s a superb video.
