After officially crossing the border into Alaska, Aimee and Chase Bartee immediately dive into the endless days of the northern summer. A stop at Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge kicks off a true birding frenzy beneath the midnight sun, before they push south toward the towering mountains and deep fjords of the Kenai Peninsula.
After setting up basecamp on the Kenai, they explore the isolated town of Whittier via its famous one-way mountain tunnel, packraft through the icebergs of Portage Glacier, and take to the water to witness tidewater glaciers calving in Prince William Sound, alongside a massive kittiwake rookery.
But the main event on the Kenai is the summer salmon run. After passing on the crowded combat-fishing of the Kenai River, Aimee and Chase find a quiet, isolated tributary teeming with pink salmon. Here, they experience the quintessential Alaskan wildlife spectacle: fly fishing in the surf while sharing the riverbank with hunting black bears, otters, and bald eagles.
