10 Days in the Spanish Pyrenees, Tomas Masa and His Lada.

What we love isn’t necessarily fly fishing itself, but everything that ties into it — everything that lets us daydream, escape, get lost in something, and more often than not that’s tied to the outdoors. Whether it’s napping by a stream on a bed of moss, hiking your ass off to reach the fish you’ve been dreaming about, hunting for porcini mushrooms, or grilling shrimp over coals while blasting some badass mixtape! Basically, what we love is whatever points us in a direction, whatever lets us taste that sense of freedom we hold so dear. So today, here we are with Tomas Masa in the Pyrenees with his old Lada Niva, and man, that’s the stuff dreams are made of!

900 km in my old Lada Niva to reach the Spanish Pyrenees. 10 days solo, in the middle of a heat wave, grinding through high-altitude tracks and bivouacs — over 150 km of dirt roads, climbing to nearly 2,200 m with Bobby, between engine overheating and mountain storms. Then I left the 4×4 behind for 3 days of fully self-sufficient trekking in Ordesa National Park, a night riding out a storm in a cave at 2,800 m, and summiting Monte Perdido at first light — 3,355 m, the third-highest peak in the Pyrenees. All in all, quite the trip!
