The Alto Chiese — Italy (and the morel mushroom pasta)

There you go, ready to conquer the world, rod in hand! But reality has just hit us hard — the price of gas is going to seriously limit our travels; in any case, the “travel” budget is going to take a real beating! So let’s look at what’s not too far from home while still offering a change of scenery. And right there, just on the other side of the Alps, the absolute dream: Italy, the Alps, and the Chiese River — and more specifically, the Alto Chiese! (We’re writing this from France. So if you read us from somewhere else on the planet, you’ll have to take a plane to Milan or if local, to Brescia and either way rent a car!)

You drive to Brescia on the autostrada and boom, you head up into the mountains toward Trentino! There you can get information here, but we’re sure that otherwise you’ll find local guides or organized tours that will make your life easier!

When we came across this film about the Upper Chiese, we immediately fell in love — a mountain stream just the way we like it, perfectly sized and packed with trout! Italy is becoming one of the premier fly fishing destinations in Europe, after having been completely forgotten for being a little too overfished… now it’s the opposite — everyone wants to go there!
