The band took its name from the lead singer\u00a0<strong>Maxayn Lewis<\/strong>, wife of band keyboardist\u00a0<strong>Andre Lewis<\/strong>, and later became known as\u00a0<strong>Mandr\u00e9<\/strong>. They were a solid funk band with a female lead singer and pre-dated\u00a0<strong>Rufus featuring Chaka Khan<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Maxayn<\/strong>&#8216;s first, self-titled album, is indeed something quite unique for a recording of early 1971 (released in 1972). His 1972 album\u00a0<em>&#8220;Dismal Prisoner&#8221;<\/em>, recorded in Memphis, produced and arranged by\u00a0<strong>Steve Cropper<\/strong>\u00a0(Stax\/Booker T. &amp; The MG&#8217;s, Blues Brothers\u2026), is a cool piece of swamp pop, between early 70s\u00a0<strong>Van Morrison<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Tony Joe White<\/strong>. Both indeed got covered on the LP, with even White guesting on guitar on his own tune. But it&#8217;s the\u00a0<em>&#8220;I Got The Power&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0from Morrison that we picked here. Is it funk rock or blue-eyed soul, it&#8217;s hard to tell, but catchy as hell for sure. Who doesn&#8217;t like a cool and rare\u00a0<strong>Van Morrison<\/strong>\u00a0cover anyway?<\/p>\n<p>03.\u00a0<strong>Ceasar Frazier<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Hicky Burr<br \/>\n(from &#8216;Hail Ceasar!&#8217; album, 1972 \/ Eastbound)<br \/>\nQUINCY JONES &amp; BILL COSBY cover, more info on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hikky_Burr\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\">wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ceasar Frazier<\/strong>\u00a0was a funky soul-jazz organist from Indianapolis who recorded several albums for the\u00a0<strong>Eastbound\/Westbound<\/strong>\u00a0label family in the &#8217;70s. His first album from 1972 featured musicians commonly associated with the\u00a0<strong>Prestige<\/strong>\u00a0label&#8217;s jazz-funk outings \u2014\u00a0<strong>Melvin Sparks<\/strong>\u00a0(guitar),\u00a0<strong>Houston Person<\/strong>\u00a0(tenor), and\u00a0<strong>Idris Muhammad<\/strong>\u00a0(drums). The LP included the sweaty acid jazz classic\u00a0<em>&#8220;Mighty Mouse&#8221;<\/em>, ad groovy versions of\u00a0<strong>Quincy Jones<\/strong>&#8216;\u00a0<em>&#8220;Hicky Burr&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Sly Stone<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>&#8220;Running Away&#8221;<\/em>. The 8+ minutes of\u00a0<em>&#8220;Hicky Burr&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0with blazing Hammond solos is the one we couldn&#8217;t pass on.<\/p>\n<p>04.\u00a0<strong>Al Green<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; The Letter<br \/>\n(from &#8216;Green Is Blues&#8217; album, 1972 \/ Hi)<br \/>\nTHE BOX TOPS cover, more info on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Letter_%28The_Box_Tops_song%29\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\">wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>American soul singer\u00a0<strong>Al Green<\/strong>\u00a0doesn&#8217;t need any introduction. Everyone knows his 1971 hit song\u00a0<em>&#8220;Let&#8217;s Stay Together&#8221;<\/em>, right? He was at the top of his career in the 1970s, and his cover of\u00a0<strong>The Box Tops<\/strong>\u00a01967 million-seller\u00a0<em>&#8220;The Letter&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0just kills it on the spot. There&#8217;s more than 200 different covers of this song, but this slowed-down, terminally soulful one is hard to beat. It&#8217;s extracted from\u00a0<strong>Al Green<\/strong>&#8216;s 1969 album<em>\u00a0&#8220;Green Is Blues&#8221;<\/em>, reissued by popular demand on 1972 with a different cover artwork.<\/p>\n<p>05.\u00a0<strong>Betty LaVette<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; The Stealer<br \/>\n(from &#8216;Child Of The Seventies&#8217; album, recorded 1972 \/ Rhino)<br \/>\nFREE cover, more info on\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\">wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Detroit soul singer\u00a0<strong>Betty LaVette<\/strong>\u00a0signed to the\u00a0<strong>Atlantic Records<\/strong>\u00a0spinoff\u00a0<strong>Atco<\/strong>\u00a0in late 1972, and recorded what should have been her great breakthrough album, at the famed Muscle Shoals Sound Studios with producer\u00a0<strong>Brad Shapiro<\/strong>. But only two 45s were released, her cover of\u00a0<strong>Neil Young<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>&#8220;Heart of Gold&#8221;<\/em>, followed several months later by\u00a0<em>&#8220;Your Turn to Cry&#8221;<\/em>. The album was finally released by\u00a0<strong>Rhino Records<\/strong>\u00a0nearly 30 years later, including many killer tracks. If you&#8221;ve (re-)discovered\u00a0<strong>Betty LaVette<\/strong>, like us, thanks to her 2005 album produced by\u00a0<strong>Joe Henry<\/strong>, you might want to check this very first one a.s.a.p.! The album&#8217;s opener is a cover of\u00a0<strong>Ron Davies<\/strong>\u2019\u00a0<em>&#8220;It Ain&#8217;t Easy&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0(recorded in also 1972 by\u00a0<strong>David Bowie<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<em>&#8220;Ziggy Stardust&#8221;<\/em>). Her interpretation is fantastic, full of hopefulness, but it&#8217;s a gritty cover of English rock band\u00a0<strong>Free<\/strong>,\u00a0<em>&#8220;The Stealer&#8221;<\/em>, which rocked our world.<\/p>\n<p>06.\u00a0<strong>Thelma Houston<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Me And Bobby McGhee<br \/>\n(from &#8216;Thelma Houston&#8217; album, recorded in 1972 and released in 1973 \/ Mowest)<br \/>\nKRIS KRISTOFFERSON cover, more info on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Me_and_Bobby_McGee\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\">wikipedia<\/a><br \/>\n<em><br \/>\n&#8220;Me And Bobby McGee&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0is a country soul song written by\u00a0<strong>Kris Kristofferson<\/strong>\u00a0in 1969.\u00a0<strong>The Grateful Dead<\/strong>\u00a0soon added it to their repertoire and it became a huge posthumous hit for\u00a0<strong>Janis Joplin<\/strong>\u00a0in 1971. There&#8217;s been a LOT of versions of this song, but the one to be found on the self-titled album from 1973 (recorded in 1972 though) from American singer\u00a0<strong>Thelma Houston<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the best out there \u2014 one of the most soulful, for sure.<\/p>\n<p>07.\u00a0<strong>Esther Phillips<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Home Is Where The Hatred Is<br \/>\n(from &#8216;From A Whisper To A Scream&#8217; album, 1972 \/ Kudu)<br \/>\nGIL SCOTT-HERON cover, more info on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pieces_of_a_Man\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\">wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The socially conscious\u00a0<em>&#8220;Home Is Where The Hatred Is&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0is one of\u00a0<strong>Gil Scott-Heron<\/strong>&#8216;s most well-known compositions. It&#8217;s a somber tale of disillusionment and hopelessness in the ghetto.\u00a0<strong>Esther Phillips<\/strong>&#8216; version is heavy, full of sorrow, a reality check still relevant today. The arrangement is classy, between 70s soul-jazz and wah-wah funk. The definitive version of the song.<\/p>\n<p>08.\u00a0<strong>Candi Staton<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; In The Ghetto<br \/>\n(from &#8216;Candi Staton&#8217; album, 1972 \/ Fame)<br \/>\nMAC DAVIS cover made famous by ELVIS PRESLEY, more info on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/In_the_Ghetto\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\">wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>First recorded by\u00a0<strong>Elvis Presley<\/strong>\u00a0in 1969,\u00a0<em>&#8220;In The Ghetto&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0was his major comeback hit. In the late 60s, American gospel singer\u00a0<strong>Candi Staton<\/strong>\u00a0was introduced to\u00a0<strong>Rick Hall<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<strong>Fame<\/strong>\u00a0studios by\u00a0<strong>Clarence Carter<\/strong>\u00a0and launched her solo career as a Southern soul stylist, garnering 16 R&amp;B hits and gaining the title of &#8220;First Lady of Southern Soul&#8221; for her Grammy-nominated R&amp;B renditions of the songs\u00a0<em>&#8220;Stand by Your Man&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>&#8220;In the Ghetto&#8221;<\/em>. The latter is our pick here, a deeply meaningful version, receiving praise from Elvis himself.<\/p>\n<p>09.\u00a0<strong>The Ice Man&#8217;s Band<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Come Together<br \/>\n(from &#8216;Introducing The Ice Man&#8217;s Band&#8217; album, 1972 \/ Mercury)<br \/>\nTHE BEATLES cover, more info on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Come_Together\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\">wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Beatles<\/strong>\u00a0have been covered over and over again, and\u00a0<em>&#8220;Come Together&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0is no exception, but we felt this laidback take on the classic was worth the inclusion. Recorded in 1972 by\u00a0<strong>Jerry Butler<\/strong>&#8216;s backing band\u00a0<strong>The Ice Man\u2019s Band<\/strong>, and taken from their self-titled instrumental album, it&#8217;s a less obvious choice than their amazing cover of<em>\u00a0&#8220;People Make the World Go Round&#8221;<\/em>, sampled by everyone.<\/p>\n<p>10.\u00a0<strong>Fred Wesley &amp; The J.B.&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Watermelon Man<br \/>\n(from &#8216;Watermelon Man&#8217; 7 inch, 1972 \/ People)<br \/>\nHERBIE HANCOCK cover, more info on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Watermelon_Man_%28composition%29\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\">wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Recorded in 1972 in New York with<strong>\u00a0James Brown<\/strong>\u00a0on drums, this cover of\u00a0<strong>Herbie Hancock<\/strong>&#8216;s 1962 jazz standard\u00a0<em>&#8220;Watermelon Man&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0was arranged by\u00a0<strong>Fred Wesley<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>James Brown<\/strong>, and is definitely in the JB&#8217;s school of funk. It pre-dates Hancock&#8217;s radical afro-funk rework of the song for the 1973 album\u00a0<em>&#8220;Head Hunters&#8221;<\/em>\u2026 which makes us wonder how much of an influence\u00a0<strong>Fred Wesley &amp; The J.B.&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0version had on\u00a0<strong>Herbie Hancock<\/strong>&#8216;s one.<\/p>\n<p>11.\u00a0<strong>Kashmere Stage Band<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Scorpio<br \/>\n(from &#8216;Zero Point&#8217; album, 1972 \/ Kram)<br \/>\nDENNIS COFFEY cover, more info on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scorpio_%28Dennis_Coffey_song%29\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\">wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The funk instrumental\u00a0<em>&#8220;Scorpio&#8221;<\/em>, with its distinctive mix of Afro-Latin rhythm and Motor City psyche, was a hit for\u00a0<strong>Dennis Coffey and the Detroit Guitar Army<\/strong>\u00a0in 1971. The guitar line which begins the record actually consists of nine guitar riffs overdubbed on top of one another, spanning three octaves. The high school band plays it funk horns instead and it&#8217;s the bomb! In the early 70s, after\u00a0<strong>Steve Cropper<\/strong>\u00a0left\u00a0<strong>Stax<\/strong>\u00a0Records,\u00a0<strong>Al Bell<\/strong>started producing their recordings, conducting some rhythm sessions at the famed Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, cutting the overdubs himself at Memphis&#8217; Ardent Studios, but more importantly moving in a more funk and soul direction. It&#8217;s gonna be hard not to feel good listening to this uplifting soul\/gospel masterpiece with\u00a0<strong>Mavis Staples<\/strong>\u00a0on lead vocals.<\/p>\n<p>13.\u00a0<strong>The Chosen Few<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Trespassin&#8217;<br \/>\n(from &#8216;Taking All The Love I Can&#8217; album, Maple, 1972)<br \/>\nTHE OHIO PLAYERS cover, more info on\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\">wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not to be mistaken with other bands with the same name \u2014 including the reggae one \u2014\u00a0<strong>The Chosen Few<\/strong>\u00a0only released 3 tracks on 45s, and the &#8216;Taking All The Love I Can&#8217; soul\/funk album for\u00a0<strong>Maple Records<\/strong>\u00a0in the early 1970s. But their version is quite stunning, in the same vein as\u00a0<strong>The Temptations<\/strong>&#8216; psychedelic stuff!<\/p>\n<p>14.\u00a0<strong>Karl Bryan &amp; The Afrokats<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Money Generator<br \/>\nWILLIE BOBO cover, more info on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Grease\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\">wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jamaican saxophonist\u00a0<strong>Karl &#8220;Cannon&#8221; Bryan<\/strong>\u00a0released this monster 45 in 1972,\u00a0<em>&#8220;Money Generator&#8221;<\/em>, produced by\u00a0<strong>Coxsone Dodd<\/strong>\u00a0on his\u00a0<strong>Iron Side<\/strong>\u00a0label.
