Maxayn<\/strong>\u00a0was an American soul group of the 1970s, with some of its core members coming from\u00a0The Buddy Miles Express<\/strong>. The band took its name from the lead singer\u00a0Maxayn Lewis<\/strong>, wife of band keyboardist\u00a0Andre Lewis<\/strong>, and later became known as\u00a0Mandr\u00e9<\/strong>. They were a solid funk band with a female lead singer and pre-dated\u00a0Rufus featuring Chaka Khan<\/strong>.\u00a0Maxayn<\/strong>‘s first, self-titled album, is indeed something quite unique for a recording of early 1971 (released in 1972). It especially includes two storming covers of\u00a0The Rolling Stones<\/strong>,\u00a0“You Can’t Always Get What You Want”<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0“Gimme Shelter”<\/em>, it was quite hard to choose between those but we opted for the former, with its strange harmonies\u2026<\/p>\n

02.\u00a0Roy Head<\/strong>\u00a0– You Got The Power

Roy Head<\/strong>\u00a0was a country\/rock\/soul singer from Texas. His 1972 album\u00a0“Dismal Prisoner”<\/em>, recorded in Memphis, produced and arranged by\u00a0Steve Cropper<\/strong>\u00a0(Stax\/Booker T. & The MG’s, Blues Brothers\u2026), is a cool piece of swamp pop, between early 70s\u00a0Van Morrison<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Tony Joe White<\/strong>. Both indeed got covered on the LP, with even White guesting on guitar on his own tune. But it’s the\u00a0“I Got The Power”<\/em>\u00a0from Morrison that we picked here. Is it funk rock or blue-eyed soul, it’s hard to tell, but catchy as hell for sure. Who doesn’t like a cool and rare\u00a0Van Morrison<\/strong>\u00a0cover anyway?<\/p>\n

03.\u00a0Ceasar Frazier<\/strong>\u00a0– Hicky Burr

Ceasar Frazier<\/strong>\u00a0was a funky soul-jazz organist from Indianapolis who recorded several albums for the\u00a0Eastbound\/Westbound<\/strong>\u00a0label family in the ’70s. His first album from 1972 featured musicians commonly associated with the\u00a0Prestige<\/strong>\u00a0label’s jazz-funk outings \u2014\u00a0Melvin Sparks<\/strong>\u00a0(guitar),\u00a0Houston Person<\/strong>\u00a0(tenor), and\u00a0Idris Muhammad<\/strong>\u00a0(drums). The LP included the sweaty acid jazz classic\u00a0“Mighty Mouse”<\/em>, ad groovy versions of\u00a0Quincy Jones<\/strong>‘\u00a0“Hicky Burr”<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Sly Stone<\/strong>‘s\u00a0“Running Away”<\/em>. The 8+ minutes of\u00a0“Hicky Burr”<\/em>\u00a0with blazing Hammond solos is the one we couldn’t pass on.<\/p>\n

04.\u00a0Al Green<\/strong>\u00a0– The Letter

American soul singer\u00a0Al Green<\/strong>\u00a0doesn’t need any introduction. Everyone knows his 1971 hit song\u00a0“Let’s Stay Together”<\/em>, right? He was at the top of his career in the 1970s, and his cover of\u00a0The Box Tops<\/strong>\u00a01967 million-seller\u00a0“The Letter”<\/em>\u00a0just kills it on the spot. There’s more than 200 different covers of this song, but this slowed-down, terminally soulful one is hard to beat. It’s extracted from\u00a0Al Green<\/strong>‘s 1969 album\u00a0“Green Is Blues”<\/em>, reissued by popular demand on 1972 with a different cover artwork.<\/p>\n

05.\u00a0Betty LaVette<\/strong>\u00a0– The Stealer

Detroit soul singer\u00a0Betty LaVette<\/strong>\u00a0signed to the\u00a0Atlantic Records<\/strong>\u00a0spinoff\u00a0Atco<\/strong>\u00a0in late 1972, and recorded what should have been her great breakthrough album, at the famed Muscle Shoals Sound Studios with producer\u00a0Brad Shapiro<\/strong>. But only two 45s were released, her cover of\u00a0Neil Young<\/strong>‘s\u00a0“Heart of Gold”<\/em>, followed several months later by\u00a0“Your Turn to Cry”<\/em>. The album was finally released by\u00a0Rhino Records<\/strong>\u00a0nearly 30 years later, including many killer tracks. If you”ve (re-)discovered\u00a0Betty LaVette<\/strong>, like us, thanks to her 2005 album produced by\u00a0Joe Henry<\/strong>, you might want to check this very first one a.s.a.p.! The album’s opener is a cover of\u00a0Ron Davies<\/strong>\u2019\u00a0“It Ain’t Easy”<\/em>\u00a0(recorded in also 1972 by\u00a0David Bowie<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0“Ziggy Stardust”<\/em>). Her interpretation is fantastic, full of hopefulness, but it’s a gritty cover of English rock band\u00a0Free<\/strong>,\u00a0“The Stealer”<\/em>, which rocked our world.<\/p>\n

06.\u00a0Thelma Houston<\/strong>\u00a0– Me And Bobby McGhee

\n“Me And Bobby McGee”<\/em>\u00a0is a country soul song written by\u00a0Kris Kristofferson<\/strong>\u00a0in 1969.\u00a0The Grateful Dead<\/strong>\u00a0soon added it to their repertoire and it became a huge posthumous hit for\u00a0Janis Joplin<\/strong>\u00a0in 1971. There’s been a LOT of versions of this song, but the one to be found on the self-titled album from 1973 (recorded in 1972 though) from American singer\u00a0Thelma Houston<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the best out there \u2014 one of the most soulful, for sure.<\/p>\n

07.\u00a0Esther Phillips<\/strong>\u00a0– Home Is Where The Hatred Is

The socially conscious\u00a0“Home Is Where The Hatred Is”<\/em>\u00a0is one of\u00a0Gil Scott-Heron<\/strong>‘s most well-known compositions. It’s a somber tale of disillusionment and hopelessness in the ghetto.\u00a0Esther Phillips<\/strong>‘ version is heavy, full of sorrow, a reality check still relevant today. The arrangement is classy, between 70s soul-jazz and wah-wah funk. The definitive version of the song.<\/p>\n

08.\u00a0Candi Staton<\/strong>\u00a0– In The Ghetto

First recorded by\u00a0Elvis Presley<\/strong>\u00a0in 1969,\u00a0“In The Ghetto”<\/em>\u00a0was his major comeback hit. In the late 60s, American gospel singer\u00a0Candi Staton<\/strong>\u00a0was introduced to\u00a0Rick Hall<\/strong>‘s\u00a0Fame<\/strong>\u00a0studios by\u00a0Clarence Carter<\/strong>\u00a0and launched her solo career as a Southern soul stylist, garnering 16 R&B hits and gaining the title of “First Lady of Southern Soul” for her Grammy-nominated R&B renditions of the songs\u00a0“Stand by Your Man”<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0“In the Ghetto”<\/em>. The latter is our pick here, a deeply meaningful version, receiving praise from Elvis himself.<\/p>\n

09.\u00a0The Ice Man’s Band<\/strong>\u00a0– Come Together

The Beatles<\/strong>\u00a0have been covered over and over again, and\u00a0“Come Together”<\/em>\u00a0is no exception, but we felt this laidback take on the classic was worth the inclusion. Recorded in 1972 by\u00a0Jerry Butler<\/strong>‘s backing band\u00a0The Ice Man\u2019s Band<\/strong>, and taken from their self-titled instrumental album, it’s a less obvious choice than their amazing cover of\u00a0“People Make the World Go Round”<\/em>, sampled by everyone.<\/p>\n

10.\u00a0Fred Wesley & The J.B.’s<\/strong>\u00a0– Watermelon Man

Recorded in 1972 in New York with\u00a0James Brown<\/strong>\u00a0on drums, this cover of\u00a0Herbie Hancock<\/strong>‘s 1962 jazz standard\u00a0“Watermelon Man”<\/em>\u00a0was arranged by\u00a0Fred Wesley<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0James Brown<\/strong>, and is definitely in the JB’s school of funk. It pre-dates Hancock’s radical afro-funk rework of the song for the 1973 album\u00a0“Head Hunters”<\/em>\u2026 which makes us wonder how much of an influence\u00a0Fred Wesley & The J.B.’s<\/strong>\u00a0version had on\u00a0Herbie Hancock<\/strong>‘s one.<\/p>\n

11.\u00a0Kashmere Stage Band<\/strong>\u00a0– Scorpio

The funk instrumental\u00a0“Scorpio”<\/em>, with its distinctive mix of Afro-Latin rhythm and Motor City psyche, was a hit for\u00a0Dennis Coffey and the Detroit Guitar Army<\/strong>\u00a0in 1971. The guitar line which begins the record actually consists of nine guitar riffs overdubbed on top of one another, spanning three octaves. The high school band plays it funk horns instead and it’s the bomb! Read\u00a0here<\/a>\u00a0what\u00a0Dennis Coffey<\/strong>\u00a0himself has to say about this killer band.<\/p>\n

12.\u00a0The Staple Singers<\/strong>\u00a0– I’ll Take You There

The Staple Singers<\/strong>\u00a0were an American gospel, soul and R&B family who started singing in churches as soon as the late 40s. In the early 70s, after\u00a0Steve Cropper<\/strong>\u00a0left\u00a0Stax<\/strong>\u00a0Records,\u00a0Al Bell<\/strong>started producing their recordings, conducting some rhythm sessions at the famed Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, cutting the overdubs himself at Memphis’ Ardent Studios, but more importantly moving in a more funk and soul direction. In 1972 the band got its first n\u00b01 hit single with\u00a0“I’ll Take You There”<\/em>, using the bass line and introduction from\u00a0Harry J Allstars<\/strong>\u00a01969 instrumental hit song\u00a0“Liquidator”<\/em>. It’s gonna be hard not to feel good listening to this uplifting soul\/gospel masterpiece with\u00a0Mavis Staples<\/strong>\u00a0on lead vocals.<\/p>\n

13.\u00a0The Chosen Few<\/strong>\u00a0– Trespassin’

Not to be mistaken with other bands with the same name \u2014 including the reggae one \u2014\u00a0The Chosen Few<\/strong>\u00a0only released 3 tracks on 45s, and the ‘Taking All The Love I Can’ soul\/funk album for\u00a0Maple Records<\/strong>\u00a0in the early 1970s. Their cover of\u00a0The Ohio Players<\/strong>‘\u00a0“Trespassin”<\/em>\u00a0(from the\u00a0“First Impressions”<\/em>\u00a0album) sounds like the original recordings was used, with overdubs and\u00a0The Chosen Few<\/strong>\u00a0vocals added on top. But their version is quite stunning, in the same vein as\u00a0The Temptations<\/strong>‘ psychedelic stuff!<\/p>\n

14.\u00a0Karl Bryan & The Afrokats<\/strong>\u00a0– Money Generator

Jamaican saxophonist\u00a0Karl “Cannon” Bryan<\/strong>\u00a0released this monster 45 in 1972,\u00a0“Money Generator”<\/em>, produced by\u00a0Coxsone Dodd<\/strong>\u00a0on his\u00a0Iron Side<\/strong>\u00a0label. It’s a nyahbingi-style cover of\u00a0Willie Bobo<\/strong>‘s most well known tune\u00a0“Spanish Grease”<\/em>\u00a0from 1965, and a perfect closer for this selection.<\/p>\n
